Edward P. and Elliott Reed letters: ALS, 1849-1879.

Contains over 50 letters of Edward P. Reed, written home to members of his family, particularly his parents and Ellen, one of three sisters, in Homer, N.Y. He recounts his voyage to California aboard the clipper, South Carolina, which left N.Y. on Jan. 24, 1849. Edward's letters give detailed descriptions of his experiences and observations, first in San Francisco; then in Sacramento, where he supplied goods to the miners; and briefly, after abandoning the merchant business, in the gold fields of Trinity County. Edward finally settled in San Jose, Calif., where, in Oct. 1850, he is joined by his brother, Elliot (later signed as "Elliott"), whose letters home are also included in this collection.
